The best medical care for you and your family, from day one
In Germany, children in families with private insurance get access to faster, more personalised medical care with better cover from birth. And the terms they secure when they're insured are the best they'll ever have.
An advantage that lasts a lifetime
The terms you get when insuring a child are the best possible — and they stay unchanged no matter how their health develops.
Private insurance for children: an option worth knowing about
When one or both parents have private health insurance in Germany, insuring the children under the same model has very concrete advantages. Children with private insurance get faster paediatric care, no waiting lists, free choice of doctor and wider cover than the public system.
What's more, children are the most favourable profile for private insurance: they're young, healthy and have no relevant medical history. That translates into very competitive premiums — usually much lower than an adult's — and contractual terms that stay unchanged throughout their life, regardless of how their health develops in the future.
It's one of those decisions that, taken well at the right time, can have a very positive long-term impact for the whole family.
A child insured privately from a young age keeps those terms for life. If they were to develop any health condition in the future, it wouldn't affect their cover or their premium at all — because the terms are already fixed from the original contract.
What changes for your children with private insurance
Beyond the price, private insurance makes a real difference in how your children receive medical care from day one.
A paediatrician with no waiting
With private insurance, getting an appointment with the paediatrician or any children's specialist is much faster. Instead of waiting weeks to see a specialist, you get the appointment in days. When a child isn't well, speed matters.
Better dental cover from an early age
Private insurance includes dental cover far superior to the public system, especially relevant in childhood and adolescence: orthodontics, preventive treatments, full check-ups. A difference you notice in the early years.
Terms guaranteed for life
The terms agreed when the child is healthy are the ones they'll always have. The insurer can't change those terms or apply surcharges for illnesses that appear later. It's a protection that goes well beyond immediate medical cover.
Cover abroad
Most private plans include medical cover outside Germany. This is especially useful for families who travel often or spend periods in other countries — children travel covered with no need to take out additional travel insurance.
How do you insure a child with private insurance?
The process is simple. When one parent has private insurance, they can apply for a separate policy for each child. Each child has their own policy, with their own insurance number and their own terms.
A child's premium is significantly lower than an adult's, precisely because the risk profile is minimal. There's no relevant medical history, no pre-existing conditions and the terms you get are the most favourable possible. Once set, that premium serves as the basis for life.
What's more, in some cases and depending on the plan, you may not have to pay premiums during parental leave for a period of up to six months — a detail worth knowing when planning a child's arrival.
Does the employer also contribute to the children's insurance?
Yes. If either parent has private insurance, the employer can also contribute to the cost of the children's insurance, up to the maximum limit set by law. It's an extra benefit many families don't know about until they ask.
How private insurance for a child is arranged
The process is simpler than it seems. In most cases, it can be sorted out in a few days.

We explain which plans are available for children, what cover they include and which fits your family's needs best. No obligation and in English.
We request a personalised quote
With the child's details — date of birth and state of health — the insurer calculates the exact premium. In most cases children are accepted with no special terms.
The policy is activated and the child is covered
Once the application is accepted, the child receives their insurance number and is covered from the agreed date. From then on they can use the insurance exactly like adults.
Parental leave and private insurance
If you're on parental leave (Elternzeit) and have private insurance, there's something interesting many people don't know: depending on the plan, you may be able to pay no premiums for a period of up to six months.
This mechanism is designed to ease the cost of insurance at a time when income may temporarily fall. It isn't automatic — you have to request it from the insurer — but it's a real option worth reviewing before that moment arrives.
At Bramex Plus we help you understand what options your specific plan has and how to handle it if it applies.
